John Sinclair
Hi, I’m John Sinclair.
Music and sport have been part of my radio life from the beginning. My broadcasting journey started at Loughborough Hospital Radio, where I presented the chart show from 1975 to 1979, back when vinyl ruled and Top of the Pops was essential viewing.
While studying at Loughborough University, I continued presenting music and sport on student radio. In 1979, my commentary on a student American football game earned me a BBC Radio 1 award. Not bad for a university gig, and it helped set me on the road to a long career in broadcasting.
I joined BBC Radio Nottingham, where I covered cricket at Trent Bridge and reported from a one day final at Edgbaston. At BBC Radio Leeds, I followed Huddersfield Town, presented live sports bulletins and brought listeners closer to the action.
I then moved to BBC Pebble Mill in Birmingham, delivering late night sports news and appearing in the 10.30pm regional bulletins across the Midlands.
BBC Radio Leicester gave me the chance to bring music back into the mix. Alongside early morning sports updates, I launched a Friday night indie rock show featuring interviews with Pulp, Björk and a young Kurt Cobain.
I later presented at Leicester Tigers games with commentator Bleddyn Jones and commentated on Leicester City during the successful Premier League years under Martin O’Neill.
After leaving the BBC in 2013, I joined Hermitage FM in Coalville, where I continued bringing music and sport together until the station’s final broadcast.
Now at CPR, I’m still doing what I enjoy most: sharing great music, celebrating sport and telling the stories behind both. Whether you are listening for the songs or the sporting memories, I’m glad you’re here.
