Chris Pitchford
Hi, I’m Chris, and music radio has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.
My love of music started in the 70s, thanks to inheriting my sister’s record collection and a growing obsession with anything that had buttons, switches, and faders. My first “DJ kit” was a cassette recorder and a Bontempi organ, and from that point on I was well and truly hooked. Weekly trips to the record shop soon followed, usually involving a new single, a lighter wallet, and just enough change left for sweets.
The 80s were my golden age of music. Albums mattered, singles were events, and radio felt exciting and alive. While there were brief distractions along the way, music and broadcasting always came out on top. I stuck with vinyl longer than most, saved hard for my first proper hi-fi, and treated every new record like a small ceremony.
Away from music radio, I’ve spent over 34 years as a presenter and sound engineer with the East Shropshire Talking Newspaper for the Blind. I joined at its very beginning and have remained involved ever since. The service provides local news and features to people with visual impairments, and it’s something I’m deeply proud to be part of. Helping to make information accessible has always mattered to me.
Radio has been the one constant throughout my working life, from community radio in the 90s to today. I still love the technical side just as much as the music, and I’m always happiest surrounded by mixers, microphones, and a mild amount of organised chaos.
On air, my taste leans heavily toward the 70s and 80s. I love the big hits, but I’m just as happy playing forgotten 45s and overlooked tracks that deserve another listen. I’ll occasionally dip outside the era too, but those decades remain the heart of what I do.
When I’m not behind the mic, I’m usually editing my wife’s latest novel, taking landscape photographs, or rummaging through the dustiest record boxes I can find in the hope of uncovering a hidden gem. Failing that, I’m probably at the nearest place selling unhealthy food.
